Biography:
Zach is a Marine Corps veteran, the grandson of a coal miner, a working-class Democrat, a father, and a native West Virginian. As a Marine, he lived by the values of honor, courage, and commitment and he still does today. After serving his country, Zach returned home to care for his grandmother and began organizing in local communities.
He has led flood relief drives, fed the houseless, participated in harm-reduction training, rallied for affordable and accessible healthcare, mobilized West Virginians to stand up to harmful extractive industries, and worked as a climate justice organizer with a progressive veterans organization.
In 2024, Zach ran for the U.S. Senate for the first time, earning 36 percent of the vote in the primary and winning nearly half of West Virginia’s counties. Now he is running to finish the job, challenging Sen. Capito, who has watched addiction devastate communities, jobs disappear, and hospitals close while taking money from lobbyists and corporations that profit from our pain.
Zach is unapologetic in his support for people-first policies, human rights, and public service rooted in integrity and respect. Unbought and unbossed, he is running to represent West Virginians and everyone who calls this country home.
His 2026 campaign has earned the endorsement of Rep. Ro Khanna.
Top Issues:
1. Working-class economic reform and jobs.
Shrewsbury frames his campaign around helping working people and ending corporate
influence in politics. He argues that West Virginia’s working class has been “sold to the highest bidder” and advocates policies that strengthen wages, unions, and economic investment in struggling communities.
2. Healthcare and community well-being.
He supports affordable, accessible healthcare and policies addressing addiction and poverty, issues that have heavily impacted West Virginia communities.
3. Environmental and energy transition.
As an organizer advocating renewable energy in coal country, he promotes economic transition and environmental cleanup while creating new energy jobs.
4. Social and racial justice.
Shrewsbury also emphasizes addressing systemic inequality through criminal-justice reform, community investment, and policies aimed at equity for marginalized groups.
Overall, his campaign positions itself as a people-first, working-class populist platform focused on economic fairness, healthcare access, and justice.
